Prince William and Kate, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, have endured public scrutiny. From their courtship to their grand wedding and marriage, the couple is definitely no stranger to the limelight.
They might’ve taken a page off of the late Princess Diana’s relationship with the media, except the problematic marriage. Additionally, they may have set a precedent for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, which is also a thoroughly modern royal marriage. But that’s for another scoop.
For now, let’s go through a few of the lesser-known details of Prince William and Kate’s royal romance:
Passion for Fashion
Although they were introduced through mutual friends and were even roommates for a time, the catalyst of their relationship was when Kate Middleton walked during a charity school fashion show in 2002. The young Kate wore a dress designed by Charlotte Todd, was see-through.
The revealing outfit caught young Will’s eye, and, as they say, the rest is history.
Time Apart, Room for Growth
Things weren’t all smooth-sailing once Kate and Prince William started dating. They even had their ups and downs. Back in 2007, the couple even split up after they grew apart. Another issue was young Will’s partying ways.
Even though Kate was devastated at the time, she admitted that the short breakup made her a stronger person. She was able to do some introspection and found who she was outside of that relationship.

Learning from the Past
After their engagement, William knew that he wanted to give Kate time to adjust to life as a royal. Kate also took inspiration from Princess Diana’s life and wanted to make a difference in her own way.
This isn’t the first time that the royal family gave one of their own time to enjoy life away from the public's prying eyes. While Kate and William were dating, the palace arranged for a “media blackout” to ensure that the couple could go out on dates and get to know each other.
After their wedding, the Queen also gave them a “two-year grace period from public life” to enjoy married life with just the two of them. They rented a five-bedroom farmhouse and got to understand their dynamics as a couple.
Beauty and Brains
Kate is the first royal wife to hold a college degree after she graduated from the University of St. Andrews with an Art History degree. She also has a talent for sketching when she drew the illustration of the church where her sister, Pippa, got married.

Unconditional Trust
Even if Prince William isn’t a big fan of jewelry, he has shown his unconditional love and trust to his bride by refusing to sign a prenuptial agreement. Prince William trusts Kate completely. This came as a surprise, given his parents’ divorce led to Prince Charles forfeiting all of his personal fortunes.
A Grand Wedding Befitting Royalty
Will and Kate’s wedding was deemed as a revolutionary occasion that merited a national holiday. Apparently, the couple wanted a day off for the entire country, and they got it.
Just Your Average Couple
Just like any other couple, Prince William and Kate still had to adjust and learn how to understand each other. Although they’re monarchs and have endured intense public scrutiny, they’re still your average husband and wife, albeit having royal responsibilities.
