The news of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars may sound like stale news now, but trust me when I say a lot is still going on underneath.
Smith's action may have been in defense of his wife's prestige, and as some would say, "he did it for love"; however, there's a whole lot of balances the things we do for love could disrupt that might suck us all just the same way Smith and his family are getting sucked up by this.
Apart from the general criticism, Smith has received since the incident, he and his family have had more than a thousand storms to weather, and many more yet to come.
1. His friendship with Chris Rock
That is, if he hasn't already lost it. You see, the two (Will and Chris Rock) met at the scene of Fresh Prince of Bel_Air in the 1990s and have long been friends since then, with Chris playing a role alongside him.
The two also starred in the Spike Jonze mockumentary Torrance Rises in 1999, after which Smith received the Kids Choice Award in 2005, which was handed to him by Rock.
The duo lent their voices to the 2005 animated film Madagascar and its other two sequels; Escape 2 Africa in 2008 and Europe's Most wanted in 2012. Well, and as a kid, these were my favorites. I could watch them all day.
Recall in 2016, during Rock's hosting at the Oscars; he had previously made reference to Jada after she boycotted the Oscars for lack of nominations for black people. In his words, "Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties. I wasn't invited."
Of course, with the two often seen hanging out together, it looks like things are about to take a new turn (if it hasn't already), and it's definitely not going to be favorable for any of them, especially Will.
2. Money
With some comments made by the Comedian after the Oscar 2022 experience, it's hard to tell if Chris Rock is giving a clue as to a lawsuit or just some pun intended.
"I'm okay. I got a whole show, and I'm not talking about that until I get paid. Life is good. I got my hearing back."
3. Film Roles
According to Hollywood Reporters, "Smith now has Apple+'s Slave Emancipation in post-production. The streamer had planned a 2022 debut but has not dated its release."
What if Hollywood is not buying or vying for any project with Smith's name on it? Seemingly, Smith's Bad Boy 4 has been put on hold along with the movie "I am Legend" which was supposed to pair him and Michael Jordan.
With everyone determined to give Smith a deserving punishment for his action, the unanswered question is, will the two movies receive a recast?
4. His Marketability
The Academy award has a way of increasing a movie's marketability and also the actors' pay. Will Smith's award, indeed came at the right time, but what good can it do now when he can't find his lead in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, nor in any other movies?
5. Banned from the Academy
Speaking on Smith's resignation from the academy, CNN.com wrote, "By resigning, Smith will no longer be able to vote on Oscar-nominated movies or performances each year. His works, however, will still be eligible for future Oscar consideration and nominations."
It’s devastating because although most people try to focus more on the impact of Smith's actions on him and his family, the truth is this might also affect the academy's idea of diversity. Unfortunately, the lack of diversity among its voters has always been the subject used by critics against the Academy.
6. Banned from the Oscars for Ten Years
Indeed, that is a huge slap. After long deliberation, the Academy's President, David Reuben, and CEO Dawn Houston released a statement that Smith will not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the academy awards.
7. His Family's Career
This time around, the impact of a slap wasn’t only felt by the subject or receiver but also by those close to the slap giver (Smith).
Words circulating right now have it that Smith's kids, Jaden and Willow may be facing backlash in their careers as well. Somehow, Mercury News seemed to analyze it well.
“Confronting the very real possibility that a night which should have been a crowning moment in his professional career could wind up damaging a family brand rooted in his seeming authentic congeniality."
8. His Reputation
The media seems to always be on alert for any bash in a person's character, and they somehow find a way of worsening the whole thing by digging up more dirt to further tint the individual’s reputation
Well, Smith's action wasn’t spared this time as his past has been dug up over the week, including Smith slapping a media person some years back, his jealousy over his wife's friendship with Tupac, and his statement about one of his co-stars on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Well, looks like there will be a lot to talk about on this issue for a long time.
9. Films financed/produced by Will Smith
Guess you never knew Smith isn't only a musician or actor, he's equally been a large part of the entertainment industry, including using his resources to produce movies like Karate kid, Cobra Kai, etc., as well as upcoming shows like Uptown Saturday night, Bounce and Hancock 2.
With the turn of events, these shows may either have to find a new producer or risk being scraped off.
10. Will Smith's Biopic
Smith's metamorphosis from a troubled young man to a huge star could be a wonderful story of motivation, which was why according to National news report, both Netflix and Apple+ were begging on to produce Smith's Biopic.
Now, with the slapping incident, according to the same National new report, both have withdrawn.
Smith might have taken an action he didn't quite think twice about for love, but that action seems like it is about to cause a backslash of a lifetime, except a powerful force, changes the direction of the sail.

I was never a fond follower of Smith. I fond him arrogant, self serving, and silly. His attitude to his co-stars in "Prince" turned me off years ago. Well, time has a way of catching up with you.

Awwww... I'm sure he's crushed. 🤣

I was just starting to enjoy will Smith as an actor
I am now turned off and won't watch him in anything
Patsy Brewer
I don't agree with what he did but I do hope he apologize's to Chris Rock.

I think it's a good reaction to his action because people of money should not be excused for being ignorant and arrogant but at the same time over the years they've also bought joy and pleasure into a lot of family houses but there should be some type of repercussion behind The slap

Me personally I feel there's consequences for every action whether good or bad. I'm pretty sure he realizes that he messed up. So there's no need to keep reminding the poor fellow. I wish he would've handled it on a different manner. I bet he does too.

I think people need to get over it people make mistakes I like his movie he a good actor

OK what he did was wrong but it was a moment of lapse in judgment because of what was said and he was punished for it but it doesn’t mean we have to keep reminding him of it nonstop people should just get over it and move or are you telling everyone that there’s people out there thats never had a single lapse in judgment in the heat of the moment and regretted it. Also why was Chris rock the one who started it by what he said got no punishment or people reprimanding him I know you meant it as a joke he did not mean it but it still happened that way?
