Prince Charles may have had an estranged relationship with his dad, but did the pain of fatherhood make him see things in a whole new light?
Now, recall that on the prince’s 70th birthday, celebrated at Buckingham Palace; the queen spoke endearingly of her son.
"It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday. Over his 70 years, Philip and I have seen Charles become a champion of conservation and arts, a great charitable leader, a dedicated and respected heir to the throne to stand in comparison with any in history, and a wonderful father."
Was Prince William's Perception of his Dad Poisoned?
Sequel to Princess Diana and Prince Charles's divorce, the two seemed to have been in a constant brawl with each other until their separation, which Andrew Morton's described as "uncontested" in his biography of the late princess.
"At home, the battlegrounds were their children and Charles's relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles," Morton wrote.
"She thinks he is a bad father, a selfish father," James Gilbey, Diana's close friend said in the princess's documentary, ‘Her True Story.'
However, Tom Bower, a British investigative journalist, in the biography, 'Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion, and Defiance of Prince Charles,' Bower claimed Charles' relationship with his kids only got estranged after he divorced.
From his account, he pinpointed Charles blaming Diana for poisoning the boys' minds towards him. That notwithstanding, to date, Charles has said nothing to these claims.
Prince Charles may have been a Remote Father Figure
Charles, at sixty-nine, had executed 546 engagements, beating every other person in the British royal family in 2017. It could seem that Charles was much more concentrated on work. According to Penny Junor (the royal biographer), "Charles has always been consumed by work because he has always been quite a remote figure."
For his relationship with his son Harry, Junor called it ‘slightly tricky.’ For her (Junor), it was a stale relationship. Of course, Charles might have been an amazing prince, but he may have also let his work come in between him and his sons.
When He wasn’t a Remote Figure, He was Always on the Wrong Track
Despite being busy, Charles used to show up at his son's school play, which the kids admitted they wished he never showed up.
According to Williams in a documentary (via The Telegraph), he was in some sort of Christmas play where he was a wizard. The young prince came on and narrated the play.
Although the explosion didn't occur the time it was meant to, it did occur after all in the middle of Williams' reading. This got his dad laughing so hard that William couldn't help but give him a big death stare which unfortunately didn't work.
"And no one else, no one else laughs. He always laughs at the wrong moment and doesn't think. Oh, I shouldn't, I should probably stay quiet. He just thinks it's the best thing ever." Harry joined in on his brother's comment.
Williams’ Thought Concerning Camilla Gave Charles a Pricky Feel
Like every other child, their parent's separation and divorce were already hard to blend for the boys, who weren't sure they were interested in the news of their father's affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, and even when he did try to tell it to them, William, in particular, didn't want to know. So, Charles dropped the issue and didn't attempt an introduction until William himself asked to meet Camilla a year later.
Junor described Charles as being ‘always sensitive’ to William and Harry's feelings regarding their stepmother. Eventually, the boys realized how happy Camilla made their father and that his happiness was more important than anything else.
Silence Over Words
In an ITV documentary, ‘Diana, Our Mother,’ which was the commemoration of the princess’s life and legacy after twenty years of death, the boys kept talking about their mother and failed to include the other parents, or maybe they simply chose silence over words.
Charles did Come Through for the Boys
The stir the ITV documentary may have roused when citizens noticed the boys said nothing about their dad shook them both. Somehow, Harry managed to speak up for himself and his brother on ITV News. He said their father was there for them after the Queen's death, adding that he tried to make sure they were protected.
