One woman on TikTok is giving waitresses simple advice on how to earn more tips. The advice? Wear an all-black jumpsuit.
In a video posted by @bonaocean, the woman begins by explaining to viewers how she made over $200 in tips. She reveals two receipt tickets, one showing a pre-tip total of $15, but the patron tipped $200, and another where she was tipped $230.
The TikToker shows her outfit to the ready-to-learn viewer, where she appears to be wearing an all-black form-fitting jumpsuit.
“So for all of you girls that work in a restaurant, and you just have to wear all black, I have the best thing for you. Go buy these jumpsuits,” she said.
In the comments, she explained that she bought it from the popular and affordable clothing store called Shein, so no one had to be too worried about the price.
“It really depends on where you work, tho”
Viewers were divided on the TikTokers apparel, with many explaining how they would get dress-coded or sent home for wearing something like this.
One commenter said, “girl what restaurant are you working in that lets you wear this all my coworkers would look at my like i’ve lost my mind”[sic].
Another commenter added to this by explaining that it depends on where you work if something like this would even be allowed in the first place.
Some viewers wondered what it would be like if they combined a couple of other popular TikTok trends, such as the RedNailChallenge and wearing pigtails along with the black jumpsuit.
“what happens if you wear the jumpsuit with your hair in pigtails? do the men self combust?” said one user.
“With red nails lol”, another person added.
Others decided to make light of this possibly career-changing advice, with one user inquiring if this would work for males.
“Only if you “forget” your apron,” a TikTok user responded.
Another replied to the comment explaining that the jumpsuit for males would have to be gray instead of black.
However, others were more doubtful that she actually received such a high tip from two customers simply by wearing the jumpsuit.
“Yeah ok...”
“bro what? you gotta be doing some extra stuff, or I'm in the wrong field of work.”
Some even went as far as to claim that the receipts were fake, with another person pointing out that the handwriting was different when compared to the written calculated tip and the signature.
@bonaocean I hope this helps yall!!!!

Inequality in The Hospitality Industry
Regardless of whether or not the receipts are fake, there is still evidence that men tip more depending on what their waitress is wearing. One study shows that waitresses who wear red get higher and more tips than waitresses wearing any other color.
On the darker side of things, tipping is seen as a form of sexism as men tend to be tipped less than women simply because male patrons prefer female servers for a bit of “s..xual gratification” they get when they are served by them. Another issue with tipping is that People of Color tend to be tipped the least overall.
Many restaurant chains, including Danny Meyer of the Union Square Hospitality Group, have decided to remove tipping from their establishments altogether. Instead, these establishments now focus on charging higher prices for food and giving their workers a higher living wage.
In some areas, waitresses may not need fancy jumpsuits at all to make decent money.
