From cheating to a lack of emotional intimacy, differences in life goals, and poor communication, relationships can end for many valid reasons. But one man decided to break up with his girlfriend for a less common and questionable reason.
In a now-viral TikTok video, Daniel Hentschel (@danhentschel) shared the story of how he ended his relationship with his girlfriend as she didn't notice he changed their picture on the fridge.
With over 2.3 million views, the short clip titled "how I found out my girlfriend didn't love me," starts with Daniel showing a tiny picture of himself and his girlfriend on their fridge.
Rather than just admiring the picture like a typical loving partner, he took it a step further and used Photoshop to test his girlfriend's love for him.
“So I took it in Photoshop and every week replaced it with a version where she was less and less visible,” he explains.
Daniel kept replacing his girlfriend's picture with progressively less visible versions until he was left with a picture on the fridge that only showed himself.
The heartbreaking aspect for him was that his girlfriend didn’t seem to notice or comment on the changed picture on the fridge, saying, “she never noticed.”
For Daniel, his girlfriend's failure to notice the change only meant one thing: “this proved that subconsciously she didn’t care that she was slowly losing me.”
Based on the outcome of his Photoshop experiment, he came to the conclusion that his girlfriend simply didn't love him. So, why would he even bother to stay with her?
“And I dumped her,” he ends the video by stating.

The comment section revealed a mix of humor, unanswered questions, and other interpretations of his experiment.
Some viewers had different interpretations than Daniel's, with one commenter suggesting that Daniel may have missed the possibility that “maybe she never noticed herself because she was only looking at you.”
Another one tried to find a flaw in Daniel's experiment, suggesting that his girlfriend wasn't losing him at all. “Technically she wasn’t losing you bc your picture was still there, she was losing herself,” they wrote.
A curious viewer posed a question that likely crossed the minds of many, asking, “where is bro getting these ideas from?”
Several commenters pointed out that what Daniel did could be considered gaslighting, a type of manipulative tactic that makes someone question their own reality.
“Isn’t this technically gaslighting?” one user questioned, with another even dubbing Daniel the “Gaslight King.”
In an interesting take, one commenter thought that the girlfriend was the winner in the situation, being saved from this type of partner, “saving her basically,” they wrote.
Ultimately, it’s safe to say that editing pictures isn't the best way to determine how much your partner loves you, and if you sense that they’re ignoring you, there's a good chance that you're right.
