A boutique store owner recently shared her encounter with a woman who had visited her store and demanded a display change. The reason? The display prominently featured a mug with a supposedly vulgar word on it.
Mug Swap Request Stuns Store Owner
In a now-viral TikTok video, Kelsey Elizabeth (@kelhazen) shared a story about a woman who entered her store with an unexpected demand.
"She asked to switch out one of our mugs in the front window because she didn’t like what it said," Kelsey says in the video.
The ‘Offensive’ Mug
The controversial mug that caused all the fuss features the phrase: "Less f------ attitude, more f------ gratitude."
Reasoning Behind Request
Kelsey clarified that the woman's reasoning revolved around the fact that her store, Pinkadot, was situated on a prominent street in Davis, California, where many families with children would pass by.
Kids and Vulgar Mugs
Addressing Kelsey directly, the woman asked her how she handles instances where kids read the mug and try to figure out the meaning of these vulgar words.
In response, Kelsey told her, “I think that’s a parent issue.”
Withdraw Support
In the end, Kelsey and her staff did not comply with the woman’s request, leading her to say that she would no longer be a supporter of their business.
Unexpected Purchase
As luck would have it, a couple happened to walk in while Kelsey was recording the video and ultimately purchased the mug.
Viewers Rally to Support Kelsey's Boutique
The video went viral on TikTok, amassing over 1.2 million views, and sparked an outpouring of support for Kelsey in the comment section. Many viewers rallied behind her, expressing their solidarity and asking, "How can we support your boutique?" in direct response to the woman's decision to withdraw her support.
“Well now I think we would all like to support you,” one viewer wrote. “Do you ship? & can you get more ‘offensive’ mugs in stock?”
Modern-Day Sensitivities
Others suggested that the woman in this situation might be overly sensitive based on their own personal life experiences. They shared, “Please I grew up walking around Spencer’s in the mall and turned out fine”
Another agreed, “I swear people nowadays are so freaking sensitive! Lol.”
Kids' Exposure to Vulgar Words
In an interesting take, another user shared their viewpoint in the comments, stating, “If a kid is old enough to read the mug while passing through, they’ve probably already heard that word before.”
Accepting the World's Realities
Another commenter argued that it is perfectly acceptable to have mugs with such phrases available to the public, pointing out that children will inevitably hear vulgar words.
They wrote, "You can’t shelter children from the literal world does she think they’re never gonna hear that word in their lives or something."
Script for Addressing Kid's Encounter with Bad Words
In a lighthearted tone, another commenter playfully proposed a hypothetical script for the woman in this scenario, envisioning a conversation with her kid encountering such words. They humorously wrote, "Here’s a script. Your child: *gasp* that’s a bad word! You: Yep, it’s for grown ups not for you. Keep walking. End scene."
In response to the previous comment, another person wrote, "I call them adult words becuase they aren't ‘bad’ ... my kid just probably shouldn't say them at 4! doesn't matter how cute it is."
Revenge Tactics
Another commenter offered a suggestion for Kelsey to respond in a humorous manner, suggesting a form of revenge against the woman in this case. "Now you have to fill the window with just those mugs," they suggested
Another chimed in, “My toxic trait would allow me to change the entire window display with the same mug(S).”
Expanded Mug Collection
In a follow-up video, Kelsey revealed that Pinkadot had an even wider range of mugs similar to the one that received criticism.
She mentioned that her store offers shipping services nationwide, encouraging viewers who were interested in purchasing any of their products to place orders from anywhere in the United States.
Welcoming the ‘Offensive Corner’
In the video, the voiceover exclaims, “The fact that all of you want to support so badly is, like, just…Chef’s kiss. Amazing.”
"So, welcome to our offensive corner," the voice cheerfully announces, as Kelsey directs the camera towards a collection of mugs, some of which bear phrases like "what a f------ day."
Supporting a Dream
In a third video, Kelsey expressed her gratitude to everyone for their unwavering support and took a moment to thank them. She also enthusiastically encouraged viewers to follow Pinkadot on TikTok.
"I just want to thank you for entertaining our offensive mug collection, and thanks for all the support, we really appreciate it," she expressed. "It truly means a lot for a small business."
Thoughts?
So, do you side with the woman who believes that the mug displaying that phrase was inappropriate and should not be available for kids to read? Or are you in support of Kelsey and would even consider buying one of her “offensive” mugs?
Either way, this whole situation serves as a reminder that anything can be monetized, including the lack of support from people, just like Kelsey did and now she's gone viral on TikTok!
