In a country where the majority of those under 35 still reside with their parents, an Italian woman fed up with her adult sons living in her house won a legal battle to have them evicted.
Sons Leave the Nest
Despite the enduring trend of Italian adults living with their parents, one mother had to resort to extreme measures when her two sons, both in their 40s, did not let go of the comforts of the family home.
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the 75-year-old mother, whose identity has not been revealed to the public, attempted several times to convince her unnamed sons to leave her residence in Pavia, Italy, but her efforts were in vain.
Two Working Sons Won’t Leave
The two adult men, aged 40 and 42, had jobs and earned their own income. However, they opted to freeload in their mother's home and did not pursue independent housing.
No Contributions and Neglected Chores
Not only did they continue residing in their mom’s house despite having their own incomes and refusing to contribute to household expenses, but they also neglected their responsibilities when it came to household chores.
Mother vs Sons
The consistent behavior that showed no signs of changing in the near future became too much for the mother to bear. As a result, she made the decision to take her own adult sons to court in order to evict them.
Sons Leave Home by Court Order
As reported by the Italian newspaper La Provincia Pavese, the mother achieved victory in her legal battle against her sons. Pavia Judge Simona Caterbi ruled that the two sons must leave their mother's residence by December 18.
Judge Acknowledges Previous Responsibility
The judge recognized in the ruling that the argument for the sons remaining in the property might have previously been considered "well-founded," taking into account a parent's responsibilities to their children.
Residence No Longer Justifiable
As these little kids grew into adult men with jobs and financial independence, Caterbi firmly stated that continuing to reside in their mother's home "no longer appears justifiable," especially since both men are now over 40.
Most Italian Youth Live with Parents
It's not uncommon for adults to depend on their parents in Italy. According to a 2023 study by Statista, approximately 70% of Italians in the 18 to 34 age group reside in their parents' households.
High Unemployment at Play
Italy has a longstanding tradition of multiple generations living together under one roof. However, the recent increase in the number of young adults residing in their family homes for more extended periods can be attributed to Italy's high rate of youth unemployment, which creates challenges for many young Italians in achieving financial independence at an early stage in their lives.
Adult Children Taking Parents to Court in Italy
Although eviction orders are uncommon, there have been other instances in Italy where adult children took their parents to court. In one case from 2020, a 35-year-old part-time musician claimed that his €20,000 (£17,400) income was insufficient for his livelihood and he required financial support from his parents. The court ultimately turned down the appeal, making it clear that young adults do not have an inherent right to financial support from their parents.
Italy's 'Big Babies'
Many individuals are labeled as "bamboccioni" (big babies), a term initially coined by an Italian politician in 2007 to criticize adults who continue to reside with their parents, implying that some do so for the convenience of free lodging and meals.
