Many Democrats are panicking over Biden's approval ratings. Still, William McInturff, a veteran GOP pollster, believes these numbers are not of any significance unless he gets another opponent, not named Donald Trump.
The repeat of 2020 elections
The Atlantic's Ron Brownstein quoted McInturff saying that for many voters, the determination factor is Donald Trump. McInturff said, "If 2024 is a Biden versus Trump campaign, we are in uncharted waters." He added, "I have never seen a number like this NBC result between an incumbent and 'challenger.'" The reason for it, according to Brownstein, is Trump's polarizing rhetoric.
The 2022 midterms support this theory
Brownstein, a political correspondent, analyst, and author, writes how "a crucial slice of voters" in the 2022 and 2023 midterms saw the "Trump-aligned GOP alternatives as too extreme." That will likely shape the 2024 elections, the journalist points out, "as much as Biden’s record will."
Voters are left with no alternative
Despite the numbers showing Trump's domination despite four indictments and several civil cases, many voters who disprove of Biden will choose what they as the lesser evil. Besides, the elections are not about one person but what they stand for, and topics like abortion, education, and social security could simply be more significant than Trump's GOP.
Biden could recover
Brownstein also shared an update on Biden's campaign on X, writing that a press release demonstrates "a revealing window into his advisers’ thinking about how he might overcome widespread discontent with his performance to win a second term next year. The journalist pointed out one part of the statement, calling it "the most telling passage."
Educating and counting on swing voters
The press release from the Biden campaign urged the media "to meet the moment and responsibly inform the electorate of what their lives might look like if the leading GOP candidate for president is allowed back in the White House."
Fear of Trump's GOP
Considering there is growing fear of Trump's second presidency, with the former president being accused of using Hitler's terminology in recent weeks, it will be an election year like we've never seen before.
