If there’s one thing that fills a dog with fear and heartbreak, it’s being abandoned by the people they love most.

This sweet dog faced that same heartbreak when he was surrendered to the shelter—but thankfully, someone extraordinary stepped in to help him heal.
Rocky Kanaka Arrives To Help
When pet rescue advocate Rocky Kanaka from California first met Chance, all he saw was a pair of sorrowful eyes peeking through the kennel doors.
Chance’s expression was a mix of fear and fragile hope, as if he was still clinging to the idea that his owner might return for him.
Kanaka couldn’t help but wonder about his story—it was clear this sweet dog had endured more than his fair share of hardship.
After asking around, he uncovered the heartbreaking truth: Chance had first been spotted running alone through the streets of California.
A kind-hearted Good Samaritan couldn’t bear to see this dog wandering alone, so they called rescuers for help. When the rescuers took him in, they discovered he had a microchip, which seemed like great news—it meant they could reunite him with his owner.
But things didn’t go as expected.
When they contacted the owner about Chance, the response was chilling: “Chance is no longer my dog.”
With that, the owner hung up, leaving the rescuers stunned and heartbroken at how someone could abandon their dog so callously.
Hope For Chance
All they could do now was focus on helping Chance heal from his trauma so he could find a loving home where he’d be treated the way he truly deserved.
The California rescuer began earning his trust with soft treats, which seemed to do the trick. They gave him plenty of space and showed endless patience as Chance slowly opened up.
It didn’t take long to notice that this sweet senior pup had only one tooth left, likely due to his age. He also had a few other health issues—cloudy eyes, dirty ears, and some extra weight.
Thankfully, with proper care and treatment, most of these problems could be resolved, giving Chance a fresh start.
Chance was put on a walking program to help him shed some weight, and he began receiving daily treatments thanks to his dedicated rescuers.
With time, the hope is that he’ll lose a few pounds, making walks easier and boosting his chances of finding a forever home.
As the days passed, Chance’s demeanor began to change—his eyes showed a glimmer of hope, and he seemed more cheerful, as if he knew he was finally in the right hands.
Though the journey ahead is still long, there’s comfort in knowing that Chance is surrounded by people who are committed to giving him the wonderful life he deserves.
