Acrylic nails hurting

Acrylic nail is a fashion accessory that has revolutionized the world of manicure fashion. Whether you get it to amplify your glam factor on a daily basis or to complete your look on a special occasion, acrylic nail is a quick and bold way to make a fashion statement. As much as we love this beauty accessory, it needs to be regularly maintained to increase its shelf-life and unfortunately, poor application of acrylic nail can cause discomfort to the wearers.

Some people may anticipate pain and discomfort for up to 2 days after application of acrylic nails. The pain may vary in intensity from one person to another but it is generally advised that acrylic nail pain which persists for more than 5 days can be alarming and warrants a professional attention. To improve your experience with acrylic nails and lessen your risk of encountering undesired effects after the application of acrylic nails, we have compiled our favorite tips below!

Why Do Acrylic Nails Hurt?

1. Poor application of acrylic nails may induce tenderness of nail beds especially if your nail technician has mistakenly filed your natural nails too deep prior to attaching the acrylic nails.

2. Drilling on your natural nails to provide a suitable surface for acrylic nails attachment is a big NO-NO. Please ensure that your nail technician uses a manual nail fail to do the job so you can avoid having excessive dents in your natural nails.

3. Application of acrylic nails with out-of-date or non-specific adhesive or glue may cause irritation and even worse, an allergic reaction to the surrounding fingertips and nail beds.

4. Excessively trimmed cuticles and/or hangnails can lead to inflammation during acrylic nail application.

5. Inadequate buffing of acrylic nails may result in thicker acrylic nails which can exert more pressure and weight on your nail beds. In addition to other rhinestones and nail blings, this exerted pressure on your nail beds may cause it to be inflamed and bleed.

6. If your acrylic nails have been poorly positioned and are even slightly glued to your skin, traction on the acrylic nails may also pull on your skin and later, causes injuries.

7. Acrylic nails which are poorly attached to your natural nails can leave room for things to catch onto and cause unwanted injuries. Besides, these nail creases would leave room for bacterial or fungal growth and cause infection to occur.

How To Avoid A Painful Acrylic Nail Experience

1. Refrain from applying acrylic nails yourself at home particularly if you are inexperienced.

2. Select a reliable and trustworthy nail salon to apply your acrylic nails for you instead of sacrificing a good quality job over a cheaper price.

3. Ensure that your nail technician does a proper job when they position the acrylic nails onto your natural nails to avoid the adhesive or nail glue from sticking to your skin.

4. Start off with shorter acrylic nails if it is your first time getting acrylic nails so you can familiarize yourself with its maintenance.

5. Use pain reliever such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen to manage mild pain or inflammation associated with acrylic nails in the first few days after application.

6. As mentioned earlier, a persistent pain of your nails would require you to revisit your nail salon for inspection. If they are infected or have other worrying indications, your acrylic nails may be removed.

7. Soak your fingers in ice cold water to help alleviate mild inflammation and swelling of the fingertips in the first few days after application.

8. Be educated of the underlying causes that can contribute to pain after an application of acrylic nails and take precautions to avoid them.
