Trying to keep our kids safe from harm goes back to the very beginning of humanity. We are the only species on this planet who try to protect their children years and years after they have been given birth, including years into the future when they venture out into the world on their own.

And if we can’t protect them as adults, we at least worry about them as we go grow old.

Stranger Danger or Strange Behavior?

One mom on TikTok, however, has taken a new approach to the traditional methods for keeping her children safe.

Marcie Whalen no longer believes in teaching her children to avoid strangers. Instead, she has created a new idea on how to teach her kids to stay safe.

She calls it “Strange Behavior”.

Instead of teaching her children to avoid strangers at all costs as a way to avoid getting hurt, she teaches them to look for certain red flags in a stranger’s behavior.

Some of the things include strangers who ask her children to keep a secret or to go somewhere with them without their mom or dad.

Whalen Doesn’t Believe In ‘Stranger Danger’

She mentions that most people are actually good people, and she doesn’t want to teach her daughters to be afraid of or avoid people in general as a rule. Instead, she wants to teach her daughters to be ‘hospitable and outgoing’.

Whalen mentions that she tries to instill these ‘red flags’ into her daughters’ minds so that they are perceptive and understanding of these examples. So whenever she or their dad isn’t around, they know exactly what to look for without needing to avoid strangers as a whole.

Whalen Is Leading The Way On How To Keep Kids Safe

This new method of teaching her children how to be safe has started a conversation on traditional means we use to keep our children safe.

Many have praised Whalen for her new unconventional method, explaining that this not only helps children to better trust themselves but also helps develop decision-making skills in the young ones. Helping to instill certain values in them that can carry over into the next generation.
