Despite the improvement in the situation of Black Americans over the years, discrimination based on skin color still persists in America today. A recent incident involving a flight attendant serves as a stark reminder of this reality, as they allegedly questioned the legitimacy of a first-class ticket held by a black passenger.

After a Black passenger filed a complaint about disrespectful treatment by a flight attendant based on her race, a well-known airline found itself facing intense criticism. This incident adds to a series of racist complaints that have plagued the airline in recent years.
Delta Airlines Faces Backlash Over Alleged Eye-Rolling Incident

In a Twitter post shared by Mari Copney in May 2023, she recounted her bad experience while traveling on a Delta Airlines flight.
“Hey @Delta, maybe check to educate your flight attendants on how not to roll their eyes when they see a black person with a first class ticket,” she wrote, “Cause the way this woman just rolled her eyes after trying to direct us to the back of the plane when clearly our seats weren’t there.”
Disappointed and Ignored

Despite tagging Delta Airlines in her tweet, Mari expressed her disappointment in not receiving any acknowledgment of her complaint even after 48 hours, writing, “As of May 31st 12pm EST still nothing from @Delta.”
Whether Mari also tried to reach out to the airline through non-Twitter channels remains unclear.
Responding to Passenger's Complaint

Within a few hours, a Delta representative responded to the situation, stating to Distractify: “Delta representatives are reaching out to this customer to understand more about what may have transpired. In addition to an always safe travel experience, we want all customers to enjoy their time with us."
A Troubled History

This is not the first instance where Delta Airlines has faced controversy regarding racism. Back in 2018, they were accused of discriminatory treatment towards passengers based on their skin color, as highlighted by the famous case of Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford.
The physician and expert in obesity medicine recounted an incident where she was on a flight from Indianapolis to Boston. During the flight, a woman seated beside her began experiencing shaking and hyperventilation.
Flight Attendants Request Medical Licenses from Black Doctors

While Stanford was already helping the passenger in need, a flight attendant approached and asked if she was a doctor. Subsequently, another flight attendant arrived and requested Stanford's medical license.
Persistent Doubt

Despite Stanford showing her medical license to the flight attendant, both attendants returned shortly to question her credentials. They even went so far as to ask if the medical license she was carrying belonged to her.
Getting Questioned

Stanford expressed her astonishment and disbelief regarding the situation, stating, “The validity of me as a physician is being called into question.”
“Because I’m Black: Filmmaker Accuses Delta Airlines of Racism

Adding to the growing list of cases involving racial discrimination associated with Delta, the airline faced allegations of racism in 2022 when filmmaker Darnell Walker claimed that he was denied boarding a flight while white passengers were permitted to board.
Late or Discriminated?

In a viral Twitter thread, Mr. Walker recounted his experience with the airline, claming that the gate attendant told him that he was too late to board the flight. According to the attendant, they had already stopped allowing passengers to board 15 minutes prior to takeoff.
Admitting Being “Racist”

The gate attendant allegedly allowed white passengers who were queued behind Mr. Walker to board the flight while denying him boarding. In a shocking revelation, the attendant admitted to Mr. Walker that the reason for his mistreatment was because he was racist.
Got Told To Rebook

“Gate agent said it was too late to get on my flight - it wasn’t. Told me to get rebooked at CS then he scanned in the people behind me,” he tweeted.
“This Seems Racist”

When Mr. Walker asked about why the passengers behind him were allowed to board, he says that he was simply told to "go over there."
In a tweet directed at the airline, Mr. Walker directly addressed the issue, stating, "Your employee... didn't let me onto the flight because I'm Black."
Delta Addresses Allegations

Delta Airlines reached out to both Dr. Stanford and Darnell after the incidents to address their concerns. The outcome and any subsequent actions taken by Detla is yet to be clear.
Banning Problematic Passengers from Future Travel

In response to the troubling incidents, the airline has taken prompt action in 2022 by removing the offending passengers from the flights and implementing a ban on their future travel.
