"I'm Still His Mother": Angry Mom Explodes on Adult Son for Not Obeying Her Instantly

A mom went to Reddit to ask whether or not she is wrong to yell at her adult son, who told her that he will “do it in a few minutes” when she told him to do something.

Mom Wants Son To Do What She Tells Him To Do Immediately. Finds His Response Disrespectful

The mom explained that she and her son, who is 18, were sitting together and relaxing. She asked him to take the garbage out, and he replied, “okay, I’ll do it in a couple of minutes.”

“He always says this. He always does it, but I find it disrespectful that he doesn't do it when I tell him to,” she writes.

She also added that it made her mad that he would wait on it instead of doing it immediately when he knows it needs to be done.

The OP then lost her temper and yelled at him to do it “now”. He then got up, took the garbage out, and went to his room.

OP Confused Why Son Is Barely Talking To Her After She Yelled At Him

She continues by explaining that she asked him later what he wanted for dinner, but he told her not to worry about it. She writes in the post that every question she has asked him after the incident has been met with one-word responses.

The OP explains that she called her boyfriend and told him what happened, to which her boyfriend pointed out that the OP’s son is paying rent so he should have a little more freedom than what she was giving him.

Unfortunately, the OP’s response to this was to further solidify her position in her son’s life. Explaining that while her son does help pay the bills, he is still her son and should listen to her whenever she tells him to do something.

Internet She’s in The Wrong For Trying To Rule Over Her Adult Son

She asked the internet if she was in the wrong for yelling at him and, unfortunately for her, she was met with an overwhelming amount of bitter “YES-ES”.

Many commenters pointed out that this power struggle would cause her to lose a relationship with her son for good if she kept this kind of behavior up, while others pointed out that her son will eventually lose respect for her if she kept trying to rule over him and his decisions.

Another user pointed out that since he pays bills AND still does what he’s told(even if he waits a few minutes), it makes what the OP did that much worse. Others compared her to their own parents, whom they are no longer in contact with, for the exact same reason the OP detailed in her post.

One person said, “I HATE when my mother pulls the "I can act this way with you because I'm your mother" card. STOP IT. He will resent you if he doesn't already. He's an adult paying RENT. Leave him alone. YOU take out the d... trash!”
