Valerie Hicks was driving in Mississippi when she saw something strange. There was an open crate by the road with a fuzzy dog and even tinier puppies huddled inside. Valerie immediately turned her car around to see what was happening.

What Happened Next

Valerie, who helps at Community Animal Rescue & Adoption (CARA), jumped out of her car to check on the situation. At first, she thought she would take the little pup with her. But when she got closer, she saw that the big dog was surrounded by her puppies – her own little family.

"I was shocked," Valerie said. "Who would do that to a new mom and her babies?"

The Rescue

Valerie quickly called for help. Her friend Christina came to assist, while Valerie comforted the nervous mama dog. She said the dog looked super sad but also thankful.

A Safe New Home

Back at the shelter, the mama dog started to relax in her safe new home. CARA asked foster families for help, and one kind family said they would take care of the puppies. Everyone was amazed at how strong and healthy the pups looked, even though they were always sleepy from nursing.

"This girl is one of the best moms ever," said CARA. Now, the puppies, who are only 5 weeks old, are with their foster family and will soon be going to forever homes.

Valerie promised that once everything is ready, the entire family will travel to a safe place up north where more people are waiting to give them a lovely home.
