A wedding is a momentous occasion for a lot of folks who get lucky enough to find the person of their dreams. But it can also cause a lot of stress when dealing with costs, invitations, preparations, and of course, your spouse’s side of the family.
One woman recently went to the Am I The A...hole (AITA) subreddit to ask the internet if she was wrong to call the cops on her mother-in-law after she stole a very precious heirloom she was meant to wear on her wedding day.
The Earrings Are A Family Heirloom Passed Down From Generation To Generation
She starts her post off by explaining that she and her husband have gotten married recently after having been engaged for a year. She further explained that when she got engaged, her mother gave her a pair of earrings and told her that every woman for generations has worn the pair on their wedding days.
She described the earrings as being “4.00ct dangling earrings, and they are worth a lot”. Mentioning that she felt very honored to be given them and that she felt closer to her grandmother, who had died 2 months prior.
Mother-In-Law Keeps Making Comments About The Soon-To-Be Bride’s Earrings
She continues the story by stating that 3 months after she received the earrings, she went dress shopping with her mother, sister, and mother-in-law. She bought all the jewelry that she would be wearing on her special day to see how they would match the selection of dresses she had.
She explains that when she put the jewelry on, her mother-in-law kept going on about how gorgeous the earrings were. The OP’s (Original Poster) mother decided to explain the story behind them, including that they are a family heirloom.
Fast forward to the day of the wedding, the OP recounts she had everything ready in her room. Her dress, flowers, shoes, makeup, and jewelry. She was also there with her mother-in-law.
Mother-In-Law Was Gone, and So Were The Earrings
The OP said she needed to go to the bathroom and when she came back out, she noticed that her mother-in-law was gone. At first, she assumed nothing of her departure until she noticed her earrings were missing. Something clicked in her, and she knew immediately who had taken them.
The OP found her mother-in-law and confronted her about the stolen earrings, which she denied. The OP asked if she could look through her bag and her mother-in-law gripped it tight and told her ‘no’.
After this, the OP called the cops, having them search her mother-in-law’s bag. They found the missing earrings, just like OP had suspected and the officers asked if she wanted to press charges. She explained that she wanted to talk to her soon-to-be husband first, and fortunately, he stated that he would support her no matter what she chose to do.
So the woman left it undecided.
However, after the wedding, she has been receiving threatening texts from her husband’s side of the family. Even her mother-in-law has been sending hateful texts, which makes the OP want to press charges now since bitterness is being thrown her way for simply wanting her family’s heirloom back.
Many Redditors sided with the OP, with many stating that she wasn’t the a...hole in this situation and that the mother-in-law is way out of line.
