Man Tells Family Not to Treat His Fiance as a Personal ATM. Family Blames Him for Ruined Christmas

A man posted on the AITA (Am I The A**hole) subreddit to ask the internet whether he was in the wrong for canceling Christmas after his family made ridiculously expensive demands of his wealthy fiance.

Man Met His Fiance IN Mexico Right Before The Pandemic, So His Family Never Got The Chance To Meet Him In Person

The story starts off with the man explaining that he met his now fiance in early 2019 before the pandemic got really bad and travel restrictions were placed.

He mentions that he took a trip to Mexico, where he met his fiance and the two really hit it off. The OP’s (Original Poster) fiance had asked him to relocate to his home country right before the U.S. placed travel restrictions, and ever since then the OP and his fiance have been living outside of the states.

The OP adds that he hasn't been able to come back to the States until recently, specifically for the holidays.

He explains that his family consists of his mother, father, 3 siblings, their spouses, and their kids. He also adds that his family was lower middle class, whereas his fiance is wealthy.

The story continues with the OP revealing that his fiance proposed to him in July, so they decided to visit for Christmas since his fiance has never met his family in person yet.

Fiance Decides To Go All Out For Christmas, But The OP’s Family Is Not Satisfied…

According to the OP, his fiance went “all on[sic]” Christmas gifts for everyone, and his family did not know beforehand that he had done this for them.

When he and his fiance were at his sister’s house for dinner, his family started making “not-so-subtle comments about all the nice things they wanted for Christmas.”

“Think Designer merchandise or expensive toys,” the OP writes, “My one sister and BIL was even showing us homes that I knew they'd never be able to afford without help.”

The OP eventually lost his cool when one of his family members commented about how they would “love for Santa to bring them a new Escalade for Christmas”.

OP Yells At His Family. Everyone Claims He Ruined Christmas

He ended up yelling at his family, explaining to them that his fiance is not their own personal ATM and that it was rude to expect someone they just met to spend so much money on things they wanted.

“I was called a lot of different things; some of the nicer ones being selfish, entitled, and a gold digger,” the OP explains.

He and his fiance ended up leaving his sister’s house and went back to Mexico for the holidays. Everything they bought was either returned or regifted.

Now the OP’s family is claiming that he ruined Christmas and he has decided not to respond to them since.

It’s safe to say that the OP and his fiance are not the ones who are in the wrong here. Many Redditors came to his defense, with some even claiming that his family is very entitled.

One person wrote, “NTA (Not The A**hole). Your family sounds truly horrible. Good luck navigating a relationship if this is how they’re starting off. May be a VERY low contact relationship with them coming soon…”

Another person said, “NTA at ALL, OP. And good for you for having your fiancée's back on this. He tried to do something nice for the people in your family, and they acted all entitled and selfish.”
