Two university students in Ottawa came across a concerning situation where they encountered two men and a visibly intoxicated young woman. Their "something is very wrong here" feelings turned out to be true as they investigated further.
It's a situation that no one wants to find themselves in, but it happens all too often - a young woman, out for a night on the town, unknowingly falls victim to predators who use drugs to take advantage of their unsuspecting victims.
The story was shared on Reddit and highlights the issue women face at bars and other places. A young woman was found with two men who claimed she was ‘just drunk’ but showed signs of being more than that.
This is how it all started
One night, the OP and her college roommate were on their way home from the Byward Market in Ottawa. It was late, around 2:30 am, and they were looking forward to getting home and ordering some pizza.
But as they walked, they came across two guys and a visibly drunk girl. They didn't think much of it at first since it's not uncommon to see that on a Friday night.
But as they followed behind them for a few minutes, something seemed off. One of the guys was carrying her, and her purse was loosely hanging from her limp wrist.

The roommates couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't right, so they decided to investigate
The two guys explained to them that the girl was their girlfriend and that she had drunk too much, so they were just taking her home.
But the answers weren’t satisfying, and they asked further questions like where they had been, where she lived, and if she was a student at the University of Ottawa.
The guys may have had a good story, but they clearly uncomfortable with the line of questioning.
During the conversation, the guy holding the girl shifted her position, causing her arm to dangle down and drop her purse. Then one of the roommates quickly picked it up and took out her ID.

They didn’t know the girl
It became even more obvious that they didn’t know the girl when a roommate asked for her name and birthday, causing the guys to become aggressive and confrontational.
OP (original Poster) pulled out his phone and called the police. The guys dropped her and took off running.
They stayed with her until the police and paramedics arrived and gave a statement, but they didn't have much to go on other than descriptions of the two guys.
They learned from the police that the girl may have been drugged and that she was lucky they were walking behind her.

The Reddit community expressed its gratitude
Reddit users were quick to show their appreciation for the roommates who had the courage to intervene in a dangerous situation, even when it was ‘not their business.’
“Thank you! I'm happy you guys prevented something traumatic happening to her,” one wrote.
“People like you make me feel a little safer when walking down the street,” a second added.
“As someone who has been taken advantage of twice while unconscious, I thank you so much. You're a real hero. I would totally give you gold but I'm a noob and have no idea how that works,” a third thanked.
“Wow, good for you guys. It can be tough to intervene when it’s “not your business” but you did the right thing. Scary!!” a fourth commented.

What we can learn from it
The bottom line is that the story shared on Reddit is just one example of how predators use drugs to exploit victims. And it shows how a passive attitude of "it's not my business" can put innocent people at risk.
So, let us all take responsibility in working towards a safer society where everyone can be safe to go out and enjoy their time without fear of being drugged.
Finally, stay safe and keep these important safety guidelines in mind when you're out and socializing.
- Be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts.
- Don’t accept drinks or drugs from strangers or people you don’t know well.
- Be cautious of drinks that taste or smell weird.
- Keep your drink with you always, and don’t leave it unattended.
- Always have a plan to get home safely, and try to go out with friends you trust.
