"I need these Uber drivers to do better": Passenger Doesn’t Allow Uber Driver Stop for Gas Refill During the Trip, Causing Stir Online

Known for its ease of use and reputation for safety and convenience, Uber has become a well-established name in the world of transportation. And while many people still rely on and trust the app, it has faced some setbacks, causing it to no longer be the go-to choice for those seeking a convenient and reliable mode of transportation.

In one instance, an Uber driver attempted to make a stop for gas during a ride with a passenger, causing the passenger to incur extra costs and face a longer wait time.

In a TikTok video, Mariya expressed her dissatisfaction with an Uber driver who tried to stop for gas before completing her ride.

"Uber drivers need to stop getting gas during trips,” Mariya (@heyitsmariya) wrote in the video's on-screen text.

She starts the video with a complaint about Uber drivers, saying "I need these Uber drivers to do better."

She goes on to detail her frustration with the situation in which she had to stop the driver from getting gas during the trip. "I literally just had to tell an Uber driver, ‘No, you cannot get gas.’ We’re literally driving in the car, literally, I have somewhere to be," she explains.

She claims that this resulted in her paying additional dollars so that another fast Uber could pick her up. “I actually paid $2 extra so that I could get a quick Uber come to me in two minutes,” she states.

However, the driver appeared to have already made up his mind to go to the gas station, which was clearly against the wishes of passenger Mariya. “He literally starts pulling into the gas station and I was like ‘no,’” she adds.

"No, like you’re not gonna get gas on my dime. Why would you accept a ride knowing you need to get gas, that’s your problem, not mine," Mariya ends the clip by saying.

She clearly believes that the driver should be responsible for fueling their vehicle before accepting any rides, so as to avoid interrupting the journey and incurring additional time and expense for the passenger.

Maryia's short TikTok video has garnered over 43k views, with many commenters sharing differing views.

Although Mariya makes a valid argument in her video that it's not her responsibility if the Uber driver needs to stop for gas during the ride and that she shouldn't be charged extra or made to wait, not all of the comments supported her view.

“Wait what if the car stops running in the middle of ur ride?” someone commented, pointing out that it may be necessary for an Uber driver to stop for gas.

“Cuz they don’t know your end destination until ur in the car their gas could get them a mile but ur goin 5 they gonna need to stop at times to get gas,” a second explained.

“Just stop and get the gas and ignore her.. she’s not billed by time it’s by the mile.. so getting gas on her dime doesn’t even make sense,” a third wrote.

Some people thought Mariya was 'rude' towards the Uber driver in the situation, with a comment, “I think it depends on the situation, but personally I wouldn’t be that rude to someone who picked me up.”

Another user chimed in on Mariya's caption about high Uber prices, saying, “And then Uber will also go back and increase the charge for “traffic and or longer routes” like what.”

One commenter offered a solution for dealing with unexpected stops, writing, “I always put that they made a unrequested stop and get a refund,”

Someone couldn't resist making a joke about the Uber driver in this story, who didn’t listen to Mariya and just pulled into a gas station. They wrote, “Uber driver should be like, no, your not telling me what to do.”

Uber's stance on when a driver is permitted to stop for fuel is quite unclear, which may be the reason why there’s a debate on whether the driver should be fully responsible for fueling their car prior to a ride or if stopping for gas during a trip can't be avoided.

However, despite Mariya's experience, Uber remains a popular choice for many, and incidents like this may be beyond the control of the driver. Some offered tips for avoiding the extra cost of waiting for a gas stop, for those who still love using the app.
