While keeping secrets from your spouse can sometimes result in negative consequences when it eventually surfaces, keeping professional secrets is usually acceptable, although this may not always be the case.
A 31-year-old wife recently shared on Reddit how her 36-year-old husband became verbally abusive towards her for not sharing all work-related matters with him.
According to the OP who recently started freelancing, both she and her husband work in the IT industry.
However, the wife was confused when she found out her husband was mad at her for not sharing technical details that her client had revealed to her.
Her husband believed that there should be no secrets between them, and he even resorted to name-calling because she refused to share work-related information.
The wife emphasized that she didn’t hide anything from him and even gave him access to her emails and messenger, but she believed that certain technical information shouldn’t be shared with her husband as it related to the professional sphere rather than the personal one.
However, her husband failed to draw the line between the two and accused her of being "cold" and "distant."
Unable to resolve the issue, she turned to the Reddit community, asking, “What is the best way to handle this situation?”

Commenters were quick to respond to the wife's question.
An outpouring of support and advice filled the comment section, with people standing up for the wife and giving her the advice she needed.
“Why does he want technical details of what you are working on?” asked one person, “Tell him client privilege, that you cannot discuss it.”
A second wrote, “If your husband can't understand the concept of client privilege, he shouldn't work in IT.”
“He really should NOT have access to your work emails,” a third shared, questioning, “what other totally unreasonable things has he convinced you are normal?”
“I would never hire your husband,” a fourth commented, “He has no concept of security.”
“That is a crime,” a fifth stated, “He is asking you to steal your client's intellectually property.”
In an update to her original post, the wife thanked the Reddit community for their reassuring responses and mentioned that leaving her husband, whom she describes as having controlling and manipulative tendencies, is not a simple solution to their problems.
The wife also added that she's currently handling each situation as it comes up instead of leaving her husband, recognizing that things aren't always black and white.
