The older generations just don't seem to get it – they keep criticizing the younger generation for wasting hours watching silly TikTok videos, thinking it's all just cute cats, pranks, and teenagers dancing in bikinis. But they're missing the point.
TikTok, like most social media platforms, is based on an algorithm. This means that whatever you watch the most on TikTok will appear on your For You page (FYP) the most. It's as simple as that.
TikTok user @youngmimayer recently pointed out the ridiculousness of older people's criticisms of TikTok videos.
She couldn't believe that whenever she brings up TikTok to a 45-year-old man, he’d say that the only videos on TikTok are teenagers doing “sexy dances in bikinis.”
In a hilarious response, the OP says to those 45-year-old men: "Sir, I don't think you just said that to this entire dinner party. And Jesus Christ, you admitted to something that could possibly lead to your arrest."
She's right. If someone thinks that TikTok only shows teenagers dancing in their underwear, it's because they're the ones who spend hours watching those videos.

“And I can tell by the look on your face you have no idea what algorithm means,” the OP continues, requesting, “Can somebody please call the cops?”
According to her, if you mention TikTok to a 45-year-old man, there's an 80% chance he’d say something like, "I don't get how you can spend hours watching teenagers dance in their underwear."
“You Douglas, we now know too much about you, friend. You’re not my friend, you belong in jail,” she suggests. “Please keep that information to yourself.”
In true TikTok fashion, viewers of the video wasted no time unleashing their humorous and witty comments.
In a hilarious exchange, one viewer couldn't help but ask, "It's algorithmic???" before jokingly adding, "I just thought that half the world is focused on unclogging storm drains."
Another viewer shared some of their FYP secrets, writing, "Mine thinks I'm a neurodivergent lesbian who likes cleaning horse hooves. Which, fair."

Others also shared their peculiar algorithmic results. "I get kittens, comedians, and communism," one user shared, while another added, "Mine is mostly female lumberjacks, handmade marshmallows, and being told I have autism/adhd."
But perhaps the most amusing comment that relates to the OP’s story came from a viewer who shared their conversation with their uncle, saying, "My uncle said that too. I told him it shows him what he watches most & interacts with most & he changed the subject rq."
At the end of the day, most people can agree that TikTok is not just for teenagers dancing in their underwear. It's a platform for everyone, and it shows you what you want to see based on your interactions with it.
So the next time someone criticizes TikTok for showing teenagers doing “sexy” dances, remind them that it's algorithmic and that they're only seeing what they choose to see. And if they're still not convinced, tell them they might belong in jail.
