Woman Skips Her Mom’s Wedding to Attend Taylor Swift’s Once-in-a-lifetime Concert - “This is why people hate crazy fans”

Attending your mom's wedding or a once-in-a-lifetime Taylor Swift concert? One person couldn’t resist the temptation and chose the latter without hesitation, sparking a wave of severe online backlash.

Mom or Taylor Swift?

Coming face-to-face with celebrities is a definitely rare sight, as they are typically confined to our television screens, but we’re perfectly content with that and hold them in high regard. Still, the idea of encountering them in real life remains a distant dream for many, a dream that may never become a reality.

For one devoted Taylor Swift fan, this dream might become a reality as they won a coveted ticket to the exclusive concert of the Blank Space singer. However, there is a catch: they must sacrifice attending their mother's wedding and sharing in her happiness on her special day.

A Clash of Events

In a Reddit post, the OP announces that their mom, who lost their birth father some time ago, is getting remarried soon. However, just a few weeks ago, they won Taylor Swift tickets for the very same day as the wedding.

Final Decision

After carefully weighing the pros and cons of each option, they reached the conclusion that attending the concert and skipping the wedding was the smartest decision, which they honestly shared with their mom.

Heartbroken

Imagine being the mother in this situation, hearing your child basically saying that a fun Taylor Swift concert is more important than your special day. Understandably, she was very upset and hasn’t spoken with them ever since.

Conflicting Emotions

“I love my mother and feel bad missing her wedding,” the OP claims, “but I thought she would understand due to the circumstances.”

Once-in-a-Lifetime Temptation

Can anyone truly blame the OP in this situation? After all, it's not every day that you get the opportunity to see the iconic Shake It Off singer. They express, “I feel like seeing Taylor Swift is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I do not want to miss.”

Strained Relationship

It seems that the OP's desire to skip their mom's wedding goes beyond their love for Taylor Swift – their strained relationship with their soon-to-be stepfather is probably a contributing factor in their decision.

“I do not like my soon-to-be stepfather,” they admit.

“Things Changed”

While the OP had also expressed their objections to their mom's marriage in the months leading up to the wedding, they initially planned to attend the wedding. “But then I won the tickets, and things changed.”

Justified Decision or a Selfish Act?

Perhaps grappling with guilt over their conflicting desires of not wanting to attend their mother's special day while also yearning for a fun-filled Taylor Swift concert, the OP seeks judgment from Redditors with the question, “AITA for choosing the concert over the wedding?”

A Clash of Opinions

In the Comment section, opinions were divided into two camps. One team labeled the OP as "YTA" for choosing Taylor Swift over their mom, finding it incredibly "weird."

On the other hand, the opposing team sided with the OP, considering it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Taylor Swift and the fact that they don’t like their soon-to-be stepfather anyway. They justified their choice by remarking, "But it's Taylor Swift. Come on."

Questioning Motives

Some Redditors were certain that the OP isn't going to the concert because they need to. Instead, they’re just using the concert tickets as a “reason” to not go to a wedding that she does not approve of.

“That's not how the real world works. People don't support people who make decisions that they don't agree with.”

The Harsh Reality

“Did Taylor Swift birth her? Did Taylor Swift raise her? Does Taylor Swift love her unconditionally? Does Taylor Swift even know who she is?” one user questioned.

“This is such an incredibly sh.tty thing for OP to do. Offering support and snatching it away over tickets to see someone who doesn’t even know she exists. F..king incredible.”

A Warning of Fallout

“YTA. Unless you hate your mother and are about to go NC, this is SUCH a sh.tty thing to do,” one user commented.

Expressing a warning to the OP, the commenter highlighted the potential consequences of their decision to skip their mother's wedding: “Don't expect her at any of your own major life milestones!”

“Very Selfish”

“YTA,” voted one Redditor. “TS is not once in a lifetime. But your mother finding happiness again (regardless of your liking for the groom) is very rare.”

Another commenter chimed in to express disagreement, “Saying TS is not once in a lifetime isn't true. Tickets get up to the thousands.”

Depends on the Motive

Someone else who was unsure about which verdict to give the OP wrote,  “NTA if you aren’t okay with the marriage and have made that clear to your mom. But YTA if you are skipping the wedding and using that as an excuse.”

A Win-Win Scenario

A creative solution was put forth by one commenter, which involved selling the tickets to the Taylor Swift concert and using the money to buy tickets for a future concert of Taylor Swift's. Additionally, they could consider exchanging their ticket with someone attending a different date of the same concert.

Creative Compromise

Another Redditor proposed that the OP could potentially attend both the ceremony and the concert by suggesting, "Can you do the ceremony and then skip the reception to head to the concert?"

They humorously remarked, “Also for what it's worth I would probably skip my own wedding for eras tickets.”

What Would Taylor Swift Say?

In disagreement with the OP's decision, a different “YTA” voter encouraged them to attend their mother's wedding by stating: “Even Taylor Swift wouldn't want you to miss your mother's wedding to go to her concert.”

Final Thoughts

What are your thoughts on this? Is it worth sacrificing the chance to attend a once-in-a-lifetime Taylor Swift concert to avoid your mother's second wedding to a groom you don't even like? Or, do you believe it's possible to find a smart solution by coordinating the wedding date with your mom to ensure that the concert and the wedding day don't clash?

Regardless, it's safe to say that both the wedding and the Taylor Swift concert are extremely rare events, and it's up to you to decide whose presence you value the most on this occasion: your mother or Taylor Swift?
