People seem to be fed up with all the "demanding" moms on airplanes, standing united in support of a man who refuses to give up his seat for a new mom and her baby. After all, if he paid for the seat, it's rightfully his.
In-Flight Drama over Seat
In a Reddit post on the AITA ("Am I the a**hole") subreddit, a man recounts his experience with his wife during a 10-hour flight from Europe to Asia. They had planned ahead and secured their desired seats, two in the first row's middle column.
Paid For Comfort
The aircraft they flew on had a seat arrangement of three columns, with each column containing three seats. “We paid for these seats as it was going to be a long journey and wanted the extra leg space,” he explains.
A Change of Plans
As they boarded the plane, they noticed a woman with a baby occupying the middle seat. The couple had booked the two aisles on the off chance that the middle seat might be empty. However, they had fully intended for the husband to switch to the middle seat if the passenger preferred an aisle seat instead of sitting between them.
‘Cheeky’ Request
The man recalls, “This woman, before I even had a chance to put my bag in the overhead compartment, asked me ‘Can I be really cheeky and ask you to switch seats with my husband?’”
Seat Swap for a Helping Hand
The woman then pointed towards her husband, who was seated in the second row on the left side column of the aircraft. The man notes in the post that only the first row offers extra leg space and requires an additional fee to reserve those seats. She explained to him that her husband needed to be seated next to her to help with their baby.
Firm Response
The wife “stayed quiet” and didn’t react to the mother’s request, but the husband “politely but firmly told her that unfortunately as his seat is in a second row, I wouldn’t be moving there as I had specifically paid for the seat with extra legroom.”
Things Get Awkward
The mother then asserted that both she and her husband had also paid for their seats, yet they were placed in the second row, which appeared very suspicious to her. “Either way I stayed firm,” the man continues. “Then the steward came and requested me to switch with the husband on her behest and I had to tell him the same thing, making things quite awkward.”
Annoyed Mom & Crying Baby
The mother apparently didn't like the man's firm stance, as he describes her reaction, "She then threw daggers at me for some time." The baby started crying after some time and the steward returned and told the man that there were two empty seats in one of the other first rows and offered to move him and his wife to those seats.
“We ended up moving there but could hear this lady animatedly make comments about us to her husband from behind for sometime after that,” he adds.
Online Community Says the Man Is Right
The man later turned to his in-laws for their opinion about the situation. They told him that he should have simply offered to switch seats, leaving him uncertain whether he was at fault for not doing this.
However, the Reddit community largely supported the husband's decision not to give up his seat for the new mom and her baby. The top comment on the post raised a valid question: “Why didn’t she offer the extra leg room seat to whoever was sitting next to her husband?”
He Wasn’t the ‘Bad Guy’ in Flight Drama
“It definitely would have been nice to sit together, but it wasn’t necessary,” one user responded to the previous question. “Traveling with a baby sucks, but OP wasn’t the bad guy for not changing seats.”
Taking Breaks
“The parents could also have switched seats during the flight to give each other breaks. Is it easier to have the parents together? Sure, but life happens and we have to roll with it.”
Automatic Entitlement
“NTA,” voted one Reddiotor, explaining, “Having a baby doesn’t automatically entitle you to whatever you want, especially because booking is in advance and they had ample time to do the same amount of planning as you. They tried to spring it on you on the plane hoping to get away with it.”
Not Your Problem
“NTA,” another agreed. “You paid for them, they're yours. Even if she was telling the truth and they were somehow able to also book those seats, that's the airline's problem, not yours.”
Alternative Solution
“I can’t understand why she was so demanding that someone give up their own seat,” one user expressed, questioning, “Why wouldn’t she just leave the baby in that row and switch seats with her husband every couple of hours?”
“That way each parent is responsible half the time? Frankly I’d love being a couple rows away to nap/eat/safely ignore what the baby is doing/whatever for half the flight.”
Breaking the Cycle
“Mommies always demand you give them your seat, even if you paid extra and booked ages in advance,” one Reddit user wrote, sharing, “This happens to me regularly when I fly and I am so sick of it. “Good on OP for saying no to the untrammeled tyranny of mommies.”
