Gen Z, the latest generation to enter the workforce, is labeled as "lazy" and was even accused of lacking the social skills necessary to hold a job.
Gen Z's productivity is different
Gen Z entered the workforce before or during the pandemic. The Adobe survey reported they are most productive between 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. and feel little to no loyalty to their employers. The survey suggested that around 70 percent would switch jobs for access to better tools to help them work more productively.
They want change
"Some might tell you that being a Gen Z whisperer is about saying 'slay' or using a stale meme, but young employees aren’t some extraterrestrial creatures dropped from Mars. We want what all workers want: the same flexibility, fair wages, and good company culture—we just might be more proactive about it," wrote Chloe Berger for Fortune magazine.
Bed rotting
Gen Z is a generation of TikTok, viral trends, and some questionable ideas, including bed rotting. Older generations call Gen Z "lazy and entitled," Fast Company reported, but for many, "Bed rotting: It’s self-care." However, the same company suggested it could be a sign of mental distress.
Millennial managers are not happy with Gen Z
The Wall Street Journal reported that millennials, one of the most open-minded generations, are not thrilled with Gen Z in the workforce. Jeff Elkins, the director of security for a Florida casino, said that Gen Zers who worked for him search for ''gray areas'' on topics he considers "very black and white."
Rule breakers
Elkins also suggested that many Gen Z workers believe that rules do not apply to them, while pizza shop manager Amber Forrest said, "I would say 70% don't work out because they lack motivation and initiative. It's irritating because most of the time, I end up doing all the work despite my efforts of delegating."
Forest, a millennial, called it "frustrating"
Forest, a young millennial, shared, "How the tides have changed is jarring," and added it is "beyond frustrating" that older generations tend to perceive all younger workers as lazy. Still, she admitted that some Gen Z workers often ate food without asking because they did not care about the rules.
Defending Gen Z
Sean Cusak, 41, is a director of a biotech startup, and he shared, "Personally, I would say what I notice about Gen Z is a tendency to turn inwards out of fear of being wrong." Cusak praised Gen Z workers for "summarizing data in a trackable, digital format."
Searching for meaning
Abhijit Bhattacharya shared his idea that Gen Z workers prioritize "more meaningful work" over higher wages. Bhattacharya said, "They are more likely to trade off salary for better quality of work, although salary is an important factor."
Feeling disengaged
Bhattacharya pointed out, “Most organizations do not have high-quality roles in entry-level positions,” adding, “Which is a major cause [of] why they feel disengaged."
Managers are struggling
"Managers are still trying to figure out how to work with us—something that happens every time a new generation falls into the limelight," confirmed Gen Z worker Chloe Berger, proving this is nothing new.
Not an easy generation
"Gen Z are digital natives, and they've always communicated online, so their interpersonal skills, or soft skills, have suffered," Tara Salinas, a professor of business ethics at the University of San Diego, confirmed.
Tech-savvy
They are tech-savvy, and Salinas added, "Companies are missing an awesome opportunity if they aren’t playing into the skills that this generation has."
