There are people we stare at, and all we see are smiles spread across their faces, and for once, we might think that they’re devoid of storms. Well, one of such people happened to be the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.
This might come as a surprise to many, but Meghan has eaten from the plate of pain. She has also felt the stinging scourge of gossip and betrayal.
However, she has managed to prove herself more than the wind. And yes, we’ll be bringing to bare a few of the potholes she had to endure.
Discrimination
This isn't a new topic. We've had public figures speak up on this steaming issue, and Meghan is one of such celebrities.
"My skin rushed with heat as I looked at my mom, her eyes welling with hateful tears. I could only breathe out a whisper of words, so hushed they were barely audible. 'It's OK, Mommy.' That’s all I could say." Meghan narrated as she spoke about the incident that took place when she got home from college on a break, only to hear that someone called her mom the N-word.
As a biracial baby born to a black mother and a white father, Meghan understood how tough it was to walk through a crowd and not get spotted.
"And there was my mom, caramel in complexion with her light-skinned baby in tow, being asked where my mother was since they assumed she was the nanny," she wrote in an essay to Elle.
Divorced Parents
Meghan's parents split up shortly after she was born, but that didn't hinder her chances of getting to know both parents.
Since her father was a director of both lighting and photography, she was always on set after school.
"Every day after school for 10years, I was on the set filled with married adults, and this is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up," she says to Esquire.
Self-esteem Struggle
Who would dream that a gorgeous lady would carry with her insecurities and low self-esteem?
"My 20s were brutal. It was a constant battle with myself. I judged my weight, my style, my desire to be as cool, as hip, as smart, and as 'whatever' as everyone else," Meghan revealed in a post on The Tig (via Express).
A Failed Marriage
Before her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan was once married to film director Trevor Engelson, but then, their marriage kind of fell off the cliff.
Meghan landed her role in Suits just a few months before they married.
Despite being together for six years before getting hitched, things started to fall apart not long after the wedding.
A source disclosed that they battled long distances.
Half-brother Nearly Stirred a Rift While Half-sister Cowrote a Shaming Story
Meghan's estranged half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., on April 26, 2018, reportedly wrote a letter to Harry advising him to beware of his half-sister.
A letter obtained by In Touch read, “As more time passes to your royal wedding, it became very clear that this is the biggest mistake in royal wedding history. Meghan Markle is not the right woman for you."
Thomas also reportedly called Meghan a jaded, shallow, conceited woman that will make a joke of Prince Harry and the royal family heritage.
Aside from Thomas, Samantha, one of Meghan's half-siblings also had a lot of damaging things to say about Meghan in her supposedly ‘tell-all book’ titled “The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister.”
While speaking about her relationship with Samantha to Oprah Winfrey on whether she felt betrayed, Meghan had this to say.
"When you talk about betrayal, betrayal comes from someone you have a relationship with. It would be very hard to tell everything about me when you don't know me. I don't feel comfortable talking about people that I don't know. I mean, the last time I saw her must have been at least 18, 19 years ago. And before that, ten years before that." She added.
