Woman Rescues Stranger Screaming For Help With Frostbitten Hands on Christmas Weekend

The Christmas heart is a giving heart, one warm-hearted woman decided to put her Holidays plans aside and lend a helping hand to a disabled man in an extreme snowstorm, reminding everyone of the true meaning of Christmas

Sha'Kyra Aughtry shared a Facebook post and video on December 25 saying that she has a 64-year-old man with special needs in her house, who she found the previous day on the street screaming for help.

She decided along with her boyfriend to take the man into her home, where they bathed and fed him. Aughtry said that he "was being blown up and down the street — it was out of control."

She added that the man — who has been later identified as Joe White — was suffering from cold injuries like having "hands with ice balls" on them before her boyfriend carried him to the house.

The temperature was extremely low the morning they found White that he had a tote bag frozen to his hands, leading Aughtry to use a blow dryer just to melt the ice off his hands.

The woman said nobody was able to come to their rescue despite her calls to the emergency services. “I’ve called everybody… this man needs serious help,” she said. "This man is not about to die over here."

Two days after Aughtry found White, he was finally transported from her house to ECMC Hospital in Buffalo and is currently receiving medical treatment, per a GoFundMe page White's coworker set up to help White with paying for his medical expenses.

His coworker Chris Dearing wrote on the page that White “did not understand the true severity of the storm."

The community-powered fundraising platform had successfully hit and far outpaced its initial goal of $20,000, raising more than $97,00 by January 2.

According to the GoFundMe page, White is stable and "in good spirits," however, it's not clear yet if the damage to his hands will be permanent.

As an act of gratitude, Dearing decided to set up a GoFundMe page for Aughtry who decided to “put her Christmas plans aside” and take good care of White.

"Without her generous spirit and fierce determination to get Joe help, my friend would be dead," he wrote on the GoFundMe page. “She's a hard-working young mother, and I want to show her at least a fraction of the support she gave my friend Joe."

Since then, the page has managed to raise more than $174,000 at the time of writing this, significantly exceeding its initial goal of $20,000.

For it is in giving that we receive, no doubt.
