A man posted to the r/relationshipadvice subreddit to ask what he should do about his mom and her friend trying to get their children – him and his mom’s friend’s daughter – ‘together’.
His Mom and Her Best Friend Always Had Plans To Get Their Children Together
For the sake of the story, he calls his mom’s best friend ‘L’ ,and her daughter ‘H’.
The post starts off with the OP (Original Poster) explaining that his mom and her best friend, L, have been friends since middle school.
They both got married and had kids at a young age, seemingly around the same time. His mom had a boy and her friend had a girl.
The OP mentions that his mom and her best friend used to joke that it was their ‘life mission’ to have their children end up together.
“Doesn’t really seem like a joke now,” the OP wrote.
For as long as the OP can remember, his mom’s best friend and her daughter have been in his life. Inescapably, he and L’s daughter have been forced to play together or take “cute” pictures with each other, their moms claiming that those pictures will be “cute at their wedding” one day.
“Honestly, I felt like I saw H way too much,” the OP wrote.
Outside of seeing her every day because of their moms, H was in all of his classes from 1st grade to 6th. He speculates that their moms probably had a part in that clever scheme seeing as how they were both teachers.
To provide more proof, he mentions that their other teachers would tease him and H, seemingly aware of what their parents were doing.
“It was super embarrassing,” he wrote.

Seeing Her Every Day, He Started To Hate Her
Unfortunately for their moms, the OP and H started to hate each other. He explains that they didn’t have anything in common but were forced to get along and hang out anyway. As a result they started to resent each other.
“Anytime we would argue with each other, our moms would just downplay it and say we were acting like an old married couple.”
However, fast forward to the day of the OP’s mom’s 40th birthday (which he mentions that H and L were obviously there), he and H actually started to get along.
At his mom’s birthday party, he and H were the only ones there who were the same age, so naturally, they hung out and decided to make fun of the other partygoers.
“I actually had a great time with her. We didn’t drink at all, so we just laughed at how drunk everyone else was at the party.”

OP Hooks Up With L’s Daughter. Their Mothers Claim “It's Finally Happening”
Eventually, the OP and H became tired and decided to head to bed. The OP explains that he already knew that people were going to stay over that night, and that their moms awkwardly planned for him and H to share his room.
It was tense and weird at first, but – as the universe would have it – H ended up making a move on the OP and they kissed. But then the kiss led to something more and they ended up hooking up.
Afterward, they started talking and decided that maybe they didn’t need to be at each other’s throats all the time.
“We joked that it was a great birthday gift to my mom by finally giving her what they wanted.”
After such an interesting turn of events, they started becoming more ‘friendly’ with each other, and their moms noticed.
Of course, they started bothering the OP and H about dating, but they both said and told their moms to be thankful that they “didn’t hate each other anymore.”
To make matters more…exciting, the OP and H go to the same college. An official friendship started to bloom and, though they hardly see each other, they were texting a lot.

They hooked up one more time before H asked the OP if he wanted to hang out with her, which the OP mentions had “never happened before.”
Their moms managed to find out and ended up “going crazy”. Claiming that what they always envisioned was finally happening.
The OP explains that though he and H are starting to like each other, it almost feels like they are enabling their mothers’ crazy behavior.
He decided to ask other Redditors what he should do.
One commenter said, “Stop telling your moms anything. This is not rocket science, y’all. They are smooshing and crushing and bouncing all over your and her boundaries. This pattern needs to stop now.”
Another Redditor wrote, “Them trying to force that throughout the years is unhealthy. And it’s honestly gross that they were doing that since you both were kids.”
