A home-alone child's gut feeling that "something is very wrong here" turned out to be true when a middle-aged man with a weird story tried to break into the house. But, the family's cocker spaniel stepped up as the hero of the hour, fiercely protecting her companion from a potential predator.
Dogs have been considered a human's best friend for a long time, and for good reason. Their loyalty and protectiveness towards their human companions are undeniable, even if it means putting themselves in danger to ensure the safety of their human families.
The story of a dog called Sadie shared on Reddit, is a shining example of a dog's unconditional love.
THIS IS HOW IT ALL STARTED
15 years ago, the OP's parents celebrated their anniversary by going out for a nice dinner, leaving their 9-year-old child home alone with their cocker spaniel, Sadie.
As they were home alone, there was a surprise knock on the door. It had only been a couple of hours since their parents left and they weren't expected back for a while. But they assumed it was their mother, who had likely forgotten something and come back for it.
The front door was a two-door system, an old wooden door, and a screen door. My dog was barking frantically, but I managed to calm her down. The house was built in the 1930s and the front door is an original piece from that time.
The cocker was barking excessively at the front door because of her tendency to react strongly to noises, but the 9-year-old was able to pull her back and calm her down to see who was at the door.
IT WASN’T THE MOM AT THE DOOR, BUT A MIDDLE-AGED MAN THEY HAD NEVER MET BEFORE
Apparently, Sadie was going crazy at the front door for a good reason, as her companion found out that the person at the door is a man they never met before in their life.
The middle-aged man started to tell them a weird story about how he had twin daughters and one of them had run away after a fight, and he believed she was hiding in my house.
They told the man straight up that there isn’t any girl in the house and asked him why he thinks she'd be there in the first place.
He starts going on and on about how this was the house they first lived in, how she was born here, and how it's a safe place for her and the most likely place she would run away to since it's the only other place she knows.
The child started to feel uneasy and knew something was off as this man's story wasn't making any sense, so they told him in no uncertain terms that he had the wrong house.
Their family had lived in this house since it was built, the father was born there and his parents gave it to my parents as a gift to start their family when the mom was pregnant with their older sister.
Additionally, there were even pictures on the wall, less than 10ft away from them, of their dad and uncle playing in the front yard in the late 70s.
The evidence was then crystal clear, this guy was obviously making up a tall tale.
By this point, Sadie was going crazy with the growling and the man was getting pretty anxious, but he kept insisting that the child didn't know what they were talking about and if they just let him search for his daughter for a few minutes, he'd be on his way.
The screen door's latch was broken and they were struggling at the time to hold the dog from the door. Suddenly, the man opened the screen door with one hand, while simultaneously reaching for my closest arm.
SADIE LASHES OUT!
The protective and aggressive cocker didn't hesitate to lunge at the man, getting a hold of his hand and biting down.
She was pushed back against the screen door and slammed it shut to free himself from Sadie’s grasp. She was still in a rage even though she was pushed back inside.
The child acted quickly and locked the front door and secured it with a chain, then they ran around the house to make sure all other doors and windows were locked.
The terrified child then hunkered down in the bathroom hyperventilating and waited for about 15 min until her dog’s growling had calmed some.
Finally, they checked outside, and there was no sign of the man or his car. They had both long gone.
Now the bad guy had gone, the child had urgently called their parents and told them to get back home right away. And when the father came back and inspected the front door, he discovered a large smear of blood on the screen door frame and siding of the house.
THE REDDIT COMMUNITY LOVED SADIE AND ASKED TO SEE PICTURES OF THIS BRAVE GIRL, AND OP DELIVERED.
Not only was Sadie treated like royalty for her heroic act and gifted a delicious whole steak to enjoy over the weekend, but she was also admired by the Reddit community who read her story.
“Sadie's a very good girl,” one praised.
“She protec AND she attac,” a second commented.
“She protec, she attac, but most importantly she get big juicy stek,” another wrote.
“First a hand, then a steak. Lucky dog!” a fourth joked.
Based on fans' request, OP shared adorable pictures of the brave cocker, who was surprisingly petite when this incident occurred, but that doesn't mean she wasn't a warrior at heart.
As the wise Mark Twain once said, “It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.” And this couldn't be more true when it comes to Sadie.
