Tech workers are often a subject of envy for their jobs at tech companies that offer high salaries to attract the most talented employees. This ensures that the company's talent remains unique while also preventing competitors from acquiring similar skills.
Times have changed
Despite the tech industry's reputation for being generous to its workers, a recent video shared by a tech worker suggests that times have changed as the industry has cut back on spending due to economic concerns.
Tech worker Jareen Imam (@jareenimam) has posted a video claiming that the biggest tech companies are reducing office perks, making the once-envied tech jobs less desirable than in the past
In her video with the text overlay "Say goodbye to office perks," Jareen argues that tech workers are now feeling the effects of the economy's impact on office perks. Free food, Uber rides, and other perks are becoming a thing of the past.
Meta's cost-cutting policies
She uses Meta as an example of a company that has employed cost-cutting policies, cutting health and wellness benefits by $1,000, ending on-site laundry, cutting back on free food, and terminating the $200 monthly Lyft credit for employees.
Google cut costs due to economic issues
Jareen adds that even Google has scaled back on employee business travel, adding that Salesforce is also trying to cut costs due to concerns about the economy. This resulted in the elimination of perks like wellness days, which were essentially paid time off.
Removing 150,000 jobs
To further emphasize her point, she mentions that the tech industry has already cut 150,000 jobs in 2022.
Jareen points out that despite the decrease in office perks, many tech workers are more concerned with having the opportunity to work from home, placing a higher value on this option over these benefits.
Fewer day-in-my-life videos of tech workers
“No one can predict the economy,” she states, “but I do think we’re going to see a lot less ‘day in my life as a tech worker’ videos in 2023.”
Jareen's video elicited diverse opinions from viewers
Many people believed that working from home is the best solution for this issue, as companies wouldn't have to spend a lot on office perks while still meeting employees' needs.
"People just want to work from home"
“Have people work from their homes,” a commenter suggested.
"I'll wfh as long as i'm given the opportunity. If I have to change jobs it's priority #1 for me, even above pay,” a second wrote,
“I’d rather work from home than have any of those perks tbh,” a third shared.
“They spend so much money on the office and people just want to work from home 😂,” a fourth commented.
Non-tech workers also argued about the difference in the work environment
Meanwhile, some non-tech workers took the opportunity to mention that tech workers enjoy a more convenient work environment compared to other jobs.
"Tech workers are crying"
“Laundry? Free food? I’m all for employee perks but… some of these things are a bit excessive,” one viewer wrote, while another added, “POV: tech workers are crying because now they will have normal days at work.”
Some say that the perks are there to control employees
One viewer offered an intriguing perspective, suggesting that these perks are "scammy" and are only a means for companies to control their employees, to whom Jareen replied: “True, they’re meant to keep you working, but if you have to be in the office it is nice to have free food.”
Tech jobs may become less attractive
Ultimately, Jareen's statistics suggest that tech jobs may become less attractive in the future, which could require companies to consider alternative approaches to retaining their talented employees.
