In a new poll, experts reveal the order of states ranked by fashion affinity. America's fashion mecca turns out to be New York. At the same time, Hawaii sits at the bottom, with more surprises on the list.

We have certain stereotypes of various areas of America and their residents. Still, new information can overturn them, as this story illustrates.

Who's the Most Fashionable of Them All?

According to new data, some of our beliefs about fashionability - and regions that do more to keep up with trends - are more or less correct. In fact, exclusive new research by the fashion experts at Karen Millen has concluded that New York is America's fashion capital.

The Empire state is closely followed by New Jersey and California, which occupy the second and third positions of the states where people care most about fashion and being fashionable.

New Jersey is a bit of a surprise, considering it is sometimes picked on as the "armpit of America." Still, the state is full of high fashion outlets, and many New Yorkers also shop there.

Where Did These Results Come From?

The poll was conducted by deeply analyzing Google Search trends focused on fashion-conscious terms that people were searching for. The experts then gathered all the data to give each state a fashion score for the past year.

The fashion industry is changing rapidly, including in the technology field. They are all about offering excellent and exciting new products that get consumers to open their wallets and have them searching online for the hottest new thing.

Taking a Look at the Winners

New York clocked in on top of this study with a score of 940, including the highest search levels in America for words such as "fashion," "jeans," "leather jacket," "dress," "handbag," and "leather" on Google.

Coming in second was Garden State, with New Jersey scoring a respectable 800. It turns out that New Jersey isn't just Tony Soprano and deli sandwiches, although one of the top search terms there was "sneakers."

Coming in third was California with a score of 724 and common search terms for "handbag," "leather jackets," and "fashion." This definitely fits the image that many of us have of the Golden State with its stylish image and inclinations.

Among the top states was Connecticut, scoring a close fourth behind California at 721 with many searches for "dress" and "leather jacket." This is definitely the land of the Gilmore Girls.

Surprising Findings

There were several interesting findings in the Karen Millen study. One was that the state of Alabama ranked very high as well, coming in seventh with being one of the highest search states for "jeans," tied with Mississippi, which ranked very high for "leather boots."

Meanwhile, folks in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, at number six and number 10, were very interested in searching for a "sweatshirt." Cold weather definitely does dictate fashion choices, after all!

Another finding that some may find surprising is Hawaii in the last place with 458 points, where folks just aren't searching for clothes or fashion items online. Then again, when you have that much surfing to do and shopfronts where you can easily pick up boardshorts or a sundress, why would you go the digital route to shop online?

North Dakota (481), South Dakota (494), and Alaska (507) also came in just above Hawaii with a low fashion score. Does that mean lumberjack coats and work boots aren't fashionable? Not at all. But it does mean that folks aren't tending to search for fashion items or clothes online.

The middle of the pack saw states like Oregon and Indiana (both 587) as well as Florida (582), Vermont (582), and Missouri (581). America's primary elections may kick off in Iowa, but its fashion trends don't. Missouri has its share of style, but the Netflix show Ozark wasn't exactly famous for its outfits for a reason.

Final Thoughts

Karen Millen commented on the search trends: "Fashion has always been an outlet of expression, and for millions of Americans, it remains one of the most important elements of people's lifestyles."

The beauty of clothing and fashion is that we all have different tastes, and there’s something for all of our tastes out there, as well as brilliant ways to boost your wardrobe and look more stylish.

This study provides exciting insight into which states remain most interested in fashion. It is no surprise that New York ranks so highly considering it is home to one of the world's fashion capitals."
